How did Big Ben get its name?

There are two possibilities:
1) Big Ben was named after "Big Ben" Caunt, who was a famous bareknuckle boxer in Victorian London, OR 2) Big Ben was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was Commissioner of Works when the bell was cast.
Which story do YOU prefer? And WHY?

  1. My heart hopes it's named after the bareknuckle boxer due to it being a bit more exciting than being named after the Commissioner of Works, but I would expect it to be named after the latter. Must of been a good feeling knowing it was named after yourself!

  2. Definitely the boxer!!!

Naming it after the Commissioner of Works reminds me of Council Leisure Centres being named after retiring Mayors!
